The many excellent characteristics of fluorescent lamps have made them the most popular and widely installed type of light bulb the in the United States and probably worldwide. They were first introduced in the 1920s and while improvements have been made over the last 100 years the technology has basically remained the same. 

The reasons why fluorescent are popular are because:

1. Fluorescents are very efficient in terms of the light they emit compared to wattage used.
2. Fluorescents have good lumen maintenance meaning the light quality does not deteriorate over time.
3. Fluorescents tend to have a long life at close to 40,000 hours for some T5s.
4. Fluorescents have a wide range of shapes, sizes and colors temperatures so theycan fit almost anywhere.
5. Fluorescents are easy retrofit.
6. Fluorescents have low operating costs.
7. Fluorescents radiate little heat into the space where they are operated.
8. Fluorescents can be dimmable when operated with a dimmable fluorescent ballast.
