LED Industry Updates

LED: INDUSTRY UPDATES
  • The are two testing methods for Solid State Lighting the LM-79 and LM-80 where conducted by the IESNA
  • LM-79 is the approved method for electrical and photometric measurements of Solid State Lighting Products
  • LM-79 applies to LED-based products with incorporate control electronics and heat sinks
  • LM-79 does not apply to bare LED chips, packages, or modules
  • LM-80 is the approved method for lumen maintenance of Solid State light sources, arrays and modules
  • LM-80 applies to LED chips. LM-80 does not apply to LED systems (LED lamps)
  • LM-80 does not define or provide methods for estimation of life
  • LM-80 supplied by LED chip manufacturers
LED: LIGHTING FACTS

In addition to test methods other government regulations have been put in place to control how information is presented to lighting professionals and consumers.

Two types of lighting facts are the DOE (Department of Energy) and the FTC (Federal Trade Commission)

DOE (Department of Energy)

  1. Is a Voluntary Program
  2. Applies to LED products only
  3. Directed to buyers, designers & energy efficiency programs

FTC (Federal Trade Commission)

  1. Is a Mandatory Program
  2. Applies to medium base General Service Incandescents, CFL’s and LED’s
  3. Directed to consumers

DOE has created the “Commercially Available LED Product Evaluation and Reporting” or Caliper.

Caliper Program tests a wide array of Solid State Lighting available for general illumination.

Caliper test results guide DOE planning; provide objective information to the public, and guide the development and refinement of standardized test procedures.
